MG Midget 1958-1964 - Setrvačník a komponenty
The flywheel is a solid round object, attached to the crankshaft of your MG Midget, which ensures that an engine runs evenly. The flywheel transfers energy to the vehicle. At low engine loads, some of the energy is used, while the rest is stored in the flywheel.
Types of flywheels:
-Mass flywheel
-Dual-mass flywheel
-Lightweight flywheel
Signs of a defect in the flywheel:
- Strange noise when engine is running, but normal sound when clutch is depressed
-Strange noises around the gearbox when starting the vehicle
-Vibrations when accelerating, especially in second or third gear and when stopping the engine
-Jolting in the vehicle when operating the overdrive gear
Causes of flywheel failure
Overheating is a common problem with the flywheel. Operation under heavy load and high temperature causes the separators and springs that provide damping to break down. Due to the high temperature, the oil can burn or boil, and axial bearings can block or break down.
Flywheel overheating is often a result of an engine that is unreliable, a malfunctioning clutch, a defect in the fuel supply, a fault in the ignition system or a poor driving style.
