The new Austin Healey Sprite created a minor sensation when It was launched in 1958. Quickly dubbed the ‘Bugeye’ by eager American buyers on account of its unusual headlights, the Sprite filled a gaping hole in the market for an afford-able sports car. In 1961 the car was restyled, with a more conventional front end and a trunk at the rear. The Sprite was now also available as the MG Midget, and that car was produced until the closure of the MG factory in 1979.
