MGB 1962-1980 - Driveshafts, propellor shaft
The drive shaft on both the front and rear axles sends the driving force of the engine directly to the wheels. It also isolates unwanted noise from vibrations. In addition to vibration and noise suppression, the main task of the driveshaft is to have an effect on the vehicle's dynamics, service life and efficiency as well as weight optimisation.
Signs of driveshaft failure:
-The floor of your MGB vibrates when driving
-The car is deviating to one side
-The car does not drive in one line
-The wheels are shaking
-Dampness or leakage of foam at the transmission
-The gears are not working smoothly
-Wheels are slipping when changing gears
-There are strange noises under the floor of the vehicle
Causes of driveshaft failure:
The homokinetic joints are the most sensitive part of the driveshaft, as it contains many moving parts, all subject to wear. A cracked dust boot is a common problem. Also, aggressive driving, powerful acceleration and heavy braking, especially with turned wheels, puts a lot of strain on the components.
Parts of the drive shaft:
-Shaft collar
-Hub chain
-Hardy disk
-Tripod drive shaft
-Cardanas
